Things you need to know about gold plating

If you are looking for jewelry on your budget, then gold-plated jewelry is a good option. It will provide you with good looks and designs and have a lower price than pure gold jewelry. Also, if you are looking for jewelry that you don't want to wear daily, then gold-plated jewelry is a good option.

There are various qualities in the gold plating, which mainly depend upon the thickness and purity of the gold coating. Gold plating also depends upon the metal which is used in the base and the craftsmanship quality.

In this blog, we have mentioned the ten things which you have to know about gold-plated jewelry:-

1.Gold plating is a process where ab metal is covered with a thin layer of gold. Two types of plating are done in jewelry like gold and rhodium.

Gold plating is done to copy the expensive pieces of gold jewelry. When we gold plate the jewelry, it is hard to tell which is the expensive piece of Gold jewelry and inexpensive.

2. There are various steps required in inflating jewelry with gold. Firstly, the piece of jewelry is cleaned properly. Cleaning the jewelry is so important as the gold layer we are applying on the metal Bond with the metal perfectly.

Secondly we will put a thin layer of Nickel on that metal stop. This nickel layer is placed on the metal so that any impact by that base metal protects the gold plate.

Now the third and final layer of jewelry is dipped in the vessel having gold in it. In the vessel, we have gold and a positive electrical charge used to plate gold on that metal. Once a good gold plating with good thickness is plated on that metal, we will remove the metal from that vessel.

3. Full plating can be done on the metals like Nickel brass, stainless steel silver, and copper. In today's time, metals like tungsten and Titanium were also gold-plated.

4. Gold-plated jewelry consists of real gold only, but the amount of gold is so less so jewelry is not so expensive. In this very we can easily see that if the purity of the gold is more the color shining is more.

5. Thickness of the gold plating is between 0.17 to 2.5 microns. A plate with a thickness of 0.17 is called gold electroplated. And when the thickness is around 0.5 to 1.0 microns is the ideal thickness of that gold-plated jewelry.

When the plating on the metal is 2.5 Micron mark, which is considered thick plating and known as heavy Gold plating, this plating is also considered very low in terms of value as it does not contain much gold.

6. Gold-plated jewelry is not profitable for future purposes as the gold there is very thin, so it isn't easy to get any gold. Therefore profit margin is very less or low in this gold-plated jewelry.

7. Gold plating gel Jewellery will fade and tarnish with time. Also, it starts losing luster and brightness with time. People think that why this Gold plating Jewellery will get spoiled, it's because of the base metal. The base metal is prone to cording and oxidizing when staining the gold plating.

However, tarnishing can be avoided in the gold-plated jewelry as the first plating of the jewelry is done with Nickel, as it does not affect the appearance of the gold on it.

8. If you keep the gold-plated jewelry with proper care, it will last up to two years. However, gold-plated jewelry does not handle a lot of exposure and can be tarnished.

9. By taking proper care of the gold-plated jewelry, you can keep history for a long period. Like, keep these jewels away from Chemicals, oil, and makeup. Clean your hands while dealing with gold-plated jewelry, do not bring jewelry in contact with salty water or chlorinated water. Body sweat affects the plating and many more things which you need to take care of.

10. Your Jeweller can easily tell you if your jewelry is gold plated or pure gold. You still want to check by yourself that your jewelry is gold plated. You can get its Idea by its price as its prices are low, and look for a Hallmark in gold plated jewelry. You will not get any Hallmark on it.
