In India, around 95% of people invest in gold and silver. Silver is one of the precious metals in India. Mostly, people consider it as ‘Shubh’ , which is auspicious for buying. Silver is used in making jewelry, silver dishes, silver ornaments, and many more items.
However, silver jewelry lasts longer if you take care of it properly. But the question comes 'how can you tell if silver is real.?
In this blog, you will get to know how you can tell if silver is real.? Some of the techniques which you will use to check the purity of silver are:-
1.Search for the tag on the silver jewelry
On every silver item, a tag or label is there, which defines the purity of the silver. In Rajasthan, 'SHREE’ mark anklets are preferred best in purity. On the anklets, there is a mark of ‘SHREE’, which states purity of the silver whether it is 60%,65%, 70%, or 80%.
However, most of the silver items have a IS mark, which stands for International silver or silver plated. Whether silver items are selling nationally or internationally, they have a hallmark on them. Shopkeepers will inform the customer to check the tag on the silver items before purchasing them.
Therefore, whenever we deal while dealing with the customers, shopkeepers must tell them that the hallmark is the symbol of checking the purity of the silver.
Sellers who are selling silver on an international level have a label of 800,900, or 925 which states the quality of the silver. Different items of silver have different percentages of purity.
2.Testing using ice cube
This test is also there to check the purity of the silver. At the time of purchasing a silver coin, how can you tell if silver is real, by using this ice cubes method? This ice cube method you can use on flat silver surfaces. However, you know that silver has the highest thermal conductivity.
So, when you put ice cubes on flat surfaces it will start melting fastly. If it does not melt quickly, then it is not pure silver. Ice cubes melt at room temperature easily. But when placed on a silver coin or flat surface they will start melting faster.
3.Use bleach test
You can use bleach to check the purity of the silver. Bleach is a chemical used to remove stains or for cleaning from the cloth. Bleach is mainly the diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite. You have to put a drop of liquid bleach on the silver surface.
Therefore, after putting bleach on the silver surface, if it deteriorates, then it is pure silver. However, the identification of real silver is that it will get black when it comes in contact with bleach.
4.Check the weight of silver items
Silver is a metal that is heavier than other metals. And it will have a specific diameter and breadth. However, if the weight of the silver is less, then silver items may be made up of silver alloys. And if its weight is more, it is made up of lead-plated silver. However, pure silver is shinier and light in weight than silver-plated ones.
5.Using Magnets
Now the different way of checking the authenticity of the silver is by using magnets. As we all know, that silver is paramagnetic and is not easily attracted to the magnet. Therefore, just bring the magnet near to the silver item if it sticks to the magnet very strongly then it is not pure silver. And if it is not pure, then it will not stick to the magnet.
6.Ringing bell test
Another test is the ringing bell test. If the silver is pure, then it produces a ringing bell sound when rubbed against each other. Therefore, if you have a silver coin, then you will drop it on the ground. Now focus on the sound that the coins make. If a silver item makes a ringing bell sound, then it is pure. And if it makes a dull sound, then other metals are mixed with it.
